Collectible books. What makes it so? Also a Catalogue.

Collectible books. What makes it so? Also a Catalogue.

Over the years I have collected poultry literature. I guess its an obvious hobby for someone in my business, and along the way, I have learned book restoration and binding to preserve the collection, as well as to make available works which are often not freely available.

Poultry history is an interesting topic. There have been about 4500 English Language publications in the last 200 up to 1960,  probably more publications than on any other animal on earth.Since then the predominant publications have been scientific and there is about another 5000 science publications since then. But sometimes the question is askled,  " Is there any value to this history?   If there is how do I decide what to buy?"

I appreciate the history of poultry, where they came from, who bred them, what management was used, what results were achieved, and what failures occured. It allows us to learn from the failures of the past, and to see the wrong assumptions that were made in setting op poultry keeping. Likewise often the early genetic works  had no understanding of the real genetic mechanisms, and the breeding methods did not understand the real implications of the genetics. So it is necesary to read this literature with a discerning eye, and ask a lot of questions about how to apply the information.

In addition, many books have been written about the various disputes as to origins and developments of the breeds. Who did what and when.  This is interesting also as the development of the industry and of the breeds went along, particularly in the periods of "hen fever" of the 1870's, with other outbreaks in the 20th century.

Collecting any item devolves as much to the desires of the collector as it is to the inherent value of the item.

In my case I have collected all poultry literature over a number of years, and the brief has been, if its printed, in English, and is about chooks, then I collect it.

Some sub categories of books.

Books on Management.

Books by women because there are only a few of them, and in this mans industry, there have been some very significant women. Not the least is Mrs Lance Rawson, a queensland wom,an from the 1870 who wrote and lectures on poultry management. Her work ios probably the rarest of any author, and certainly the rarest of any Australian poultry author.

Books on Breeds.  Many works, varying from original work, to clones and repeated schools of thought. The best ones are those close to the generation of the new breeds.

Agricultural Pamplets. Mainly produced by governments in order to encourage the new industry.

Sales material. Usually by companies all the way from snake oil  salesmen to real products of value.

Club newsletters. More interesting to those of a special breed and for the history of the breeders of each era.

Association Literature, eg American Poultry Association, Bantam Association, English Poultry Club etc.

The classics, that is pre 1850. The original works which explored the possibilities of poultry from the wild bird up to the domestic farm animal. The oldest is latin from the first century AD. No longer any originals as they were manuscripts which were copied by scribes, and copies again, over the centuries.

Colour plate books, Eg Lewis Wright, Megargee, Harrison Weir, etc. Interesting as they show the breeds as they became recognizable rather than just a generif farm animal. They demonstrate the genetic potential and flexibility of poultry.

Facsimile works

Today there has been an upsurge in interest in the "old ways" of managing poultry. A number of the old books had reemerged as reprints because the originals are scarce. In particular the management books are less scarce and the price of original copies of many of these has fallen becasue of the new editions.

Colour plate books have maintained their values because of the demand for the plates for home decoration.  In my case  I have been producing facsimile editions of rare works as they are so rare, it justifies the time in producing these works as limited hand made editions, which in themselves  are much cheaper than "originals", but each is different, and so collectible in its own right.

brcommover.jpg

So I have added a few more of the management style works and have dropped the prices to reflect this change in the collectible market. In addition with the change of the business, Simon and Kelly are a little overwhelmed by it all and at this time are not really intending to learn the intracies of the old book market. So I will be offering some books at cheaper prices to free up some shelves. I hope these will interest you. I had intended to put pictures on line but unfortunately we ended up a bit too bsuy to get that done.

I am not in the office all the time so its a bit hard to always be available to talk about the titles. This will be especially so in January. However these are not listed on the regular Eshop, you will need to send an email  to projects@bellsouth.com.au . I will get back to you with prices and payment, or to get them added in with others orders. As always withold books order a few and we will give some discount. If there are 2 prices choose the lowest.
